146,700 full-time equivalent jobs

Full-time equivalent jobs linked to shooting across the UK, including unpaid work (2022)

What the figure measures

  • The Value of Shooting 2024 estimates that shooting in the UK accounted for 146,700 full-time equivalent jobs in 2022.
  • The total includes paid work and the value of unpaid help, converted into full-time equivalents. It does not include voluntary conservation work, which the report counts separately.
  • It is not a count of people in work, and it is not limited to rural areas. The report bases its UK figures on where shoot providers are located, not where the shooting takes place (page 26).

Other figures from the same report

  • 67,000 full-time equivalent jobs supported directly by shoot providers: 29,000 paid and 38,000 unpaid (pages 8 and 10).
  • 173,000 full-time equivalents once voluntary conservation work is added (page 8).
  • 2.3 million people involved in some form of shooting-related work in 2022, 1.1 million paid and 1.2 million unpaid. Some work only on shoot days, such as beaters and pickers-up, so this counts people, not full-time jobs (page 10).

Limits of the figure

  • All the figures are estimates based on a survey of 12,084 questionnaires completed in the second half of 2022 (page 4).
  • They describe 2022, not the current year.
  • The report says its figures are not all directly comparable with the 2014 study, because the methods differ (page 4). We do not compare the two.
  • The research was commissioned by shooting organisations.
