What the evidence says

“Shooting is just a hobby for the wealthy elite.”

What the evidence says

  • The Value of Shooting 2024 estimates there were 553,000 active shooting participants in the UK in 2022. Of these, 66 per cent took part in clay target shooting and 53 per cent in game shooting. Many did both (page 11).
  • The same report gives a total of 620,000 people actively involved in shooting-related activities (page 3). That figure includes shoot providers and traders, so it is higher than the number of people who shoot.

What the evidence does not show

  • The report does not give figures on participants’ income or wealth, so it cannot confirm or rule out the claim.
  • The participant numbers are estimates based on the survey behind the report, and describe 2022.
  • The research was commissioned by shooting organisations.
