The natural capital benefits of shooting, page 4

Where the figure comes from

A BASC report on the natural capital benefits of shooting puts a value on costs that the NHS and local authorities avoid. The report breaks the £64.3 million down as follows:

Breakdown

  • £20 million from physical health benefits for people involved in shooting.
  • £6.7 million from mental health benefits for people involved in shooting.
  • £37.6 million from air pollutants removed by woodland created by and managed for shooting. The report describes this as a benefit to everyone’s health.

Limits of the figure

  • This is a modelled valuation, not money saved and counted. The report used expert opinion to set how much of each benefit to attribute to shooting (page 5).
  • It forms part of the report’s estimate that shooting’s natural capital benefits are worth more than £1.1 billion a year in 2023 prices (page 3).
  • The report was produced by BASC, a shooting organisation.
  • This figure does not come from the Value of Shooting survey.
