£500 million: the value of conservation work

Estimated value of conservation work by shoot providers and volunteers (2022)

“the CiK value of conservation work carried out in 2022 was estimated at £500m, equivalent to 26,000 full-time jobs”

The Value of Shooting 2024, page 18

What the figure measures

  • The figure puts a value on conservation work done in 2022. It adds the work done by volunteers to the paid conservation work carried out by shoot providers. The report says this was equivalent to 26,000 full-time jobs.
  • CiK stands for contribution in kind. The report uses it for voluntary or unpaid support, valued “based on equivalent earnings” (page 8).
  • It is a value put on people’s time. It is not money spent or invested in conservation.

What the work includes

The report lists pest and predator control, survey and bag returns, clearing rides, planting game crops and building nest boxes. Pest and predator control was the most common activity, at more than a fifth of conservation effort (page 18).

Limits of the figure

  • It is an estimate based on the survey behind the report.
  • It describes 2022.
  • The research was commissioned by shooting organisations.
